Intrusive Memories
Unwanted, distressing memories of the traumatic event that feel vivid and difficult to control. This may include flashbacks, nightmares, or emotional distress when reminded of the trauma.
Avoidance
Avoiding places, people, conversations, or situations that remind you of the traumatic experience. You may also try to suppress thoughts or emotions connected to what happened.
Negative Changes in Mood and Thinking
Persistent feelings of guilt, shame, fear, or hopelessness. Some people experience emotional numbness, difficulty feeling positive emotions, memory gaps related to the trauma, or a sense of detachment from others.
Hyperarousal and Reactivity
Feeling constantly on edge or unsafe. This can include irritability, difficulty sleeping, exaggerated startle response, trouble concentrating, or being easily startled.
